Paris 2024: view of the Olympic venues in Paris
Cette page est aussi disponible en français
The Paris 2024 Games are taking place mostly in the heart of the city, within temporary stadiums: an exceptional setting for athletes and spectators from all over the world. To ensure the safety and protection of residents, athletes and visitors, the French government has set up perimeters around the competition venues. These are deactivated between the Olympic and Paralympic Games, from August 12 to 28.
One hundred years after the 1924 edition, Paris hosted the Olympic Games from July 26 to August 11, 2024, and, for the first time, will host the Paralympic Games from August 28 to September 8. The competitions take place in the heart of the city, in ephemeral venues located around the capital's greatest monuments: the Eiffel Tower, Grand Palais, Concorde, Alexandre III Bridge…
This exceptional event calls for exceptional measures : the Paris Prefecture of Police has set up perimeters around the competition venues to ensure the safety of spectators, athletes and local residents during the Games.
The French government, the Paris 2024 Organizing Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games and the City of Paris have a common goal: to minimize the impact of these perimeters on the daily lives of Parisians living near competition venues, and on economic and social activities during the Games.
They are therefore designed to reconcile the safety requirements of a major event with the movements of local residents, and access to their homes, workplaces or businesses.
These perimeters have led to access restrictions or detour for motorized vehicles. Between August 12 and 27, these perimeters are deactivated, and no Games Pass is required.
The Olympic and Paralympic venues are being disrupted during the assembly and dismantling phases. See our page dedicated to the assembly and dismantling of the venues.

How do you get a Games Pass for your travels?

Since May 13, 2024, the Prefecture de Police has set up a digital platform to simplify the management of derogations and ensure smoother access to the red perimeter for authorized persons.
It enables all authorized persons to register their request and justification for exemption in advance. If the application is accepted, the Préfecture de Police issues a Pass Jeux.
The Games Pass covers the entire Olympic and/or Paralympic period (for local residents, professionals, delivery personnel, etc.) and can be used on a one-off basis for certain users (visitors, short stays). For people with digital difficulties, the city offers a dedicated service.

Is your address within a traffic traffic restrictions?

How do perimeters work?

Vidéo Youtube
The systems deployed by the Préfecture de Police distinguish between different perimeters, with varying constraints:
  • The Paris 2024 organizing perimeter (competition venues) tightened as close as possible to the Paralympic site.
  • The protective perimeter, known as "SILT" (Internal Security and Counter-Terrorism), adjoining the organizer's perimeter: this secures the area by authorizing access only to spectators and people accredited by Paris 2024.
  • No motorized traffic perimeter (red).
  • Regulated motorized traffic perimeter (blue).

Organizer's perimeter on competition sites

Since March 2024, Paris 2024 has organized the installation of the Olympic and Paralympic venues. They will be dismantled progressively until October 2024.
  • Only persons and vehicles accredited by Paris 2024 or in possession of a ticket will be allowed access to the site.
  • No residents, shops or businesses are located within the organizing perimeters. Only parking restrictions will be in place in the vicinity of certain sites.
  • Drop-off/pick-up zones for people with reduced mobility are planned as close as possible to each of the Olympic and Paralympic venues.
  • Access by emergency vehicles (SAMU, fire department, police or gendarmerie, first-aiders) to the organizers' perimeters will be subject to prior authorization from the Préfecture de Police.

The "SILT" protection perimeter

Since the 2015 attacks, perimeters known as "SILT" are regularly implemented during major events. They involve the neutralization of numerous access points. Only spectators and people accredited by the organizer will be able to access this perimeter.
The vast majority of LTIS perimeters correspond to the organizing perimeters of Olympic and Paralympic venues.
Their installation will have no impact on local residents, shops and businesses, and ensures safety within the site.

Red (no motorized traffic) and blue (restricted motorized traffic) perimeters

Two types of perimeter, red and blue, have been created around the competition sites.

What are the timetables for these red and blue perimeters?

These perimeters will be activated simultaneously around the venues on each competition day, two and a half hours before the start of the first event, and will be lifted one hour after the end of the last event. The gates to the competition sites will open one and a half hours before the start of the sporting sessions.
On road race days, the red perimeter will be activated three hours before the start of the race and lifted one hour after the end.

How does the red perimeter ban on motorized traffic work?

The red perimeter is a safety perimeter designed to secure pedestrian flows around the Paralympic venues, by limiting motorized traffic.
This perimeter will be systematically implemented by the State during Games events (competitions, road races and opening ceremonies):
  • Restrictions apply to motorized vehicles only, unless otherwise authorized.
  • Access remains possible for pedestrians, bicycles and scooters, with no need for proof of identity or security checks.

Red perimeter around competition sites

  • Around the competition sites, pedestrians and cyclists are authorized to move freely within the red perimeters without having to justify their movement.
  • Cars and motorized two-wheelers are prohibited within the red perimeter. Access is authorized only for emergency services and authorized personnel.
  • They must first register on the Préfecture de Police's digital platform to obtain a dematerialized document to present to the police at the entrance to the perimeter. For those with digital difficulties, a dedicated service will be offered by the City (details to follow).
  • Motorized traffic, even with an exemption, is only allowed outside the pedestrian flow of spectators (before and after events).
  • Residential parking is only possible on certain roads (currently being defined by the Préfecture de Police).

Red perimeter around road races

  • For road races (cycling, marathon, triathlon, walking), the red perimeter is deployed around the course for a few hours during the race.
  • Pedestrians and cyclists are allowed to move around the race course without having to justify their movements.
  • Cargo bikes are allowed to pass through certain access points identified in the red perimeter, subject to control by the police.
  • Crossing points are set up to allow people to cross the competition courses on foot: these are open for set times. It may be necessary to wait a few minutes before crossing, depending on the number of people and the course of the race.
  • Cars and motorized two-wheelers are not allowed inside the red perimeter for the duration of the race. Access is permitted only for imperative reasons, and is managed by the police at the roadblocks. Persons with a legitimate reason for entering the red perimeter will be authorized to do so by the police on a case-by-case basis. Prior registration on the digital platform is not required for the races, given the short duration of the events and the exceptional nature of the derogations.
  • Access for emergency services is provided via crossing points allowing vehicles to cross the competition courses.

How does the blue perimeter of regulated motorized traffic work?

The blue perimeter, defined for each site, aims to reduce transit flows around the red perimeter, i.e. by diverting vehicles that have no reason to go there upstream of the zones. This prevents users from getting stuck inside the perimeters.
  • Access to this perimeter is authorized for all types of vehicles as long as the driver can justify the need for access to the blue zone: access to home, work, delivery, breakdown service, moving house, medical appointment…
  • Prior registration on the Prefecture de Police platform is not required to enter the blue perimeter. Any legitimate proof of identity (delivery note, proof of address, etc.) will be accepted for inspection by the police.
  • Except for residents, parking is not a legitimate reason for entering the blue perimeter.
  • Pedestrians and cyclists are allowed to use the site at all times.

Access to the ring road

No doors will be closed during the Games. There will be free access to the ring road (including near competition venues: Porte de Versailles, Porte de la Chapelle). A dedicated lane on the ring road will be reserved for organizers.
The following Parisian Olympic lanes (VROP) are accessible from Tuesday August 13 to Wednesday August 21 inclusive: boulevard de Bercy, avenue de la Porte-de-la-Chapelle, cours Albert 1er, avenue de la Grande Armée, avenue Marceau, porte Maillot. They will then be reactivated from August 22 to September 11. The one on quai des Tuileries will remain active continuously until September 11.
