Americans, Japanese, Germans, Brazilians… Since July 24, the Olympic Games have attracted foreign tourists who have come to experience the Paris 2024 Games. French visitors are also in attendance!
Their different accents echo through the streets of the capital. We've been waiting for them, and now they're here: the tourists! A total of 3.1 million tourist arrivals were recorded during the Olympic fortnight, representing an increase of 27% for French visitors and 13% for foreigners compared to last year.
More generally - because not all visitors are "tourists" - the overall volume of visitors is estimated at 11.2 million. Of these, 44.6% are from the Paris region, 12.5% are national tourists, 15.2% are international tourists and 27.7% are day-trippers.
According to the Paris Tourism Barometer, 100,000 passengers landed at Paris airports between July 24 and 27, 33% more than on the same dates in 2023. With a peak of 29,000 passengers on Thursday July 25, the day before the opening ceremony.
Between the Olympic and Paralympic Games (August 12 to 27), international air arrivals are forecast to rise by 7.9% compared to 2023, with North America (108,000 arrivals) up 16% and Europe (76,000 arrivals) up 4.3%.

13.5% Americans… And +94% Japanese!

13.5% of international tourists are from the United States (21% more than in 2023). Paris also saw many more visitors from Germany (130,000), the UK (115,000), Brazil (107,000), China (82,000) and Japan than in 2023. In the case of the Japanese, who were slow to return after the health crisis, there was even a 94% increase, with 47,000 people registered.
As for the French, they also rushed to watch the sporting events and enjoy the capital, arriving mainly from the Rhône, Gironde and Haute-Garonne regions (+68% compared to 2023!).
Many of them booked hotel accommodation, as the occupancy rate in Paris hotels from July 23 to August 6 was 84%, up 10% on last year. The biggest increase was in the upmarket segment, with an occupancy rate of 85.5%, up 16.5% on 2023. The preferred arrondissements for overnight stays were the 15th, 8th and 9th.
Length of stay in the capital is also on the rise, with an average of 3.1 nights for French visitors (vs. 2.1 in 2023) and 2.9 nights for foreigners (vs. 2.5 in 2023).
Tourist patterns and zones differ from those observed during a traditional summer. Visitors go where the Games are held, particularly around the large fan zones and Olympic competition venues.
Three examples of Olympic venue zones illustrate this increase:
  • The 19th, home to the Parc des Nations, including Club France (over 3.8 million cumulative visitors according to Paris2024),
  • the 15th, with the Arena Paris Sud: +167% more visitors on Sunday July 28th than in 2023,
  • It seems that Americans have a particular appetite for the Grand Palais (8th)!

Paris 2024 recorded over 9.5 million tickets sold for the Olympic Games by spectators from 222 different countries. The top five? Firstly, the French, who purchased 62% of the tickets, followed by the British, Americans, Germans, and Belgians.
Nearly 450,000 spectators attended beach volleyball matches at the foot of the Eiffel Tower, and almost 1 million people took to the streets of Paris for the men's and women's road cycling events. Another world record attendance was 66,000 for a women's rugby 7s match.
Last but not least, 213,000 spectators flocked to the Parc des Champions - an unprecedented concept and a first in the history of the Summer Olympics - and no fewer than 200,000 booked to visit the Vasque in the Tuileries Gardens!
Visitors also took advantage of their stay to visit the capital's theaters, museums and other entertainment venues.
