This year, Paris is hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Take a look back and a look ahead at the key moments of a major year for the capital!
On July 26th, 2024, the eyes of the world will be on Paris for the launch of the Olympic Games, held until August 11th! A historic fortnight for the City of Light, which will then host the Paralympic Games from August 28th to September 8th. 100 years after hosting the Games in 1924.

In February: the Arena at Porte de la Chapelle was officially opened

The only sports facility built in Paris for the Games, the Arena was unveiled to the public on February 11th. The 8,000-seat arena will host the badminton and rhythmic gymnastics events of the Olympic Games, and the para-badminton and para-weightlifting events of the Paralympic Games.
The arena will also host concerts and shows after the Games as well as sporting events… It includes two adjacent sports halls. Cycle paths, pedestrian forecourts, greenery… the whole area around Porte de la Chapelle has been revitalized for the Games.
Five sports facilities get a makeover before the Games
The Dauvin (18th) and Vallerey (20th) swimming pools, the Coubertin stadium (16th), the Max Rousié sports center (17th)… Five sports venues get comprehensive renovations ahead of the Olympic and Paralympic Games. >More info

March: the construction of the competition sites begins

The competition venues in the heart of the city (Trocadéro, Eiffel Tower, Pont d'Iéna, etc.) will require temporary installations before and after the Olympic and Paralympic Games period, starting in March. The Paris Prefecture de Police will also set up perimeters around the competition venues for the duration of the Games, to ensure the safety of spectators, athletes and local residents.

Fancy attending the Olympic or Paralympic Games? In spring 2024, the Paris 2024 Games resale platform will open. It will be the only official site for ticket holders from all over the world wishing to resell their tickets.

July 14: the Olympic flame arrives in Paris!

From May 8th to July 26th, 2024, the Olympic Torch Relay will pave the way for the Paris 2024 Games celebration. Torchbearers will pass through Paris on July 14th and 15th. Then the flame will set off again on the evening of July 15th to tour the rest of France, returning to the capital on July 26th for the opening ceremony.

July 26th: the Seine, opening ceremony superstar

For the first time in the history of the Olympic Games, the opening ceremony will take place outside a stadium. On July 26th, 2024, nearly 10,500 athletes from 206 delegations will parade down the Seine in front of several hundred thousand people. A six-kilometre route on the water, from the Pont d'Austerlitz to the Pont d'Iéna! All staged by artistic director Thomas Jolly.

August 10th, 2024: two night races of the "Marathon pour tous" (Marathon for all)

The "Marathon pour tous" will take place at night on August 10th, 2024. The public has the choice between two routes. A 42.195 km race for seasoned runners (on the same route as the Olympic marathon) between Hôtel de Ville and Les Invalides, and a second 10 km race in Paris. To take part, you can try to win a free race number!

August 28th: Paralympic Torch Relay through the streets of Paris

Four days of relays, 1,000 torchbearers and 50 cities… The Paralympic Torch Relay will mark the start of the Paralympic Games. In Paris, on August 28th, flame-bearers will carry eleven individual torches to 22 locations in Paris and its arrondissements, while the main flame, from Great Britain, will pass through the Place de la Nation, the 11th arrondissement Town Hall, the Place de la République, the Place de la Bastille and Hôtel de Ville plaza. Twelve flames to symbolize the twelve days of competition from August 28th to September 8th!

August 28th: Paralympic Games to kick off at the Concorde!

The opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games will take place on August 28th, on the Place de la Concorde, preceded by a parade down the Champs-Élysées. 65,000 spectators and 4,400 athletes are expected to attend. The closing ceremony will take place at the Stade de France (Seine-Saint-Denis).
